Free write about the topic with organization methods at a minimum. Get everything down in your own words. I like to pretend I'm writing a rough lesson plan for someone who knows very little about the subject. This assement is, for the most part, not neccessary until preparing for an exam. It can also be used as a refresher after some time has passed.
After the assesment, go back to your notes and jot down headings that you Do Not Remember, Can Only Summarize, Partially Remember, Have An Understanding, or Have Mastered.
